On her actual day of birth in 1995, we both almost died in a 
horrible horrible hospital. That obstetrics ward was closed down two 
months after her birth.

First I ask students what the word 'critique' reminds them of. Then I talk about how at art, writing, architecture, music, and theater schools people actually REQUEST critiques from visiting artists, because the idea is to get better for your 12k a year, not just get warm fuzzies.

Redact add and subtract to the imagery as well.

Remember- viewers want to solve the mystery themselves. Don't be a spoiler. Don't spell it all out for them! You don't have to be 100% sure what it means yourself, as long as it creates an aura of mystery.

I use creative commons to create my own works, i credit the original artists, I then [post the work, and the original artist comments upon it. This isn’t possible with google image search. I think the approach you are advocating here is not driving them on frenetically at the finish line, but getting them to internalize those high standards ahead of time. 

Flow. If they've already internalized what you've taught, at showtime it should just arrive to those relaxed and ready.

Thoughts?
I would like to know your thoughts on allowing former students to be friends on Facebook. I have a number of former students- 6th grade and up, who keep requesting me as friends of FB. By the way, I am no longer teaching.
